[KITlist-Tech] Tech Mobile Lead / Sr. Back End Developer for Lonely Planet (Oakland, CA)

Position Overview:

The position is primarily responsible for:

·Backend development using Ruby on Rails or Java to build and maintain server technology to build and power our mobile applications on a range of client platforms (iOS, Android, mobile web, HTML 5, Blackberry…etc.)

·Team lead for both frontend and backend development of mobile applications by an in-house team.

·Oversee external development partners to ensure it meets and fits into Lonely Planet's quality and architectural framework.

·Participating in the architecture of Lonely Planet wide platform initiatives. Being the subject mater expert and advocate for Mobile.

Technical Leadership

·Support the Agile iteration planning process by providing high level technical estimates and feature level technical vision

·Represent the mobile development team's standards and technical architecture in dealings with the wider Lonely Planet business stakeholders.

·Act as a point of escalation for development peers on technical decisions

·Monitor and assist in the creation of mobile development standards and the Lonely Planet technical architecture

Team Leadership

·Actively build and maintain morale levels through open communication and activities that foster a sense of team unity

·Manage direct reports to ensure they understand and meet the expectations of their role within their team and within Lonely Planet

·Proactively and collaboratively set team and individual goals, aligned to Lonely Planet's goals

·Conduct mid year and end of year performance reviews with direct reports

·Work toward achieving team and individual goals, demonstrating Lonely Planet's relevant Core Competencies in 'how' you go about achieving outcomes

·Ensure direct reports receive the necessary level of guidance and support to achieve their goals, identifying opportunities for individual growth and agreeing areas for development

·Ensure relevant training and career development opportunities are identified, implemented and applied

·Provide timely and constructive feedback on a regular and ongoing basis to direct reports as a part leading their overall achievement and development

·Manage the ongoing recruitment and succession planning needs of your team

·Comply with appropriate Industrial Relations legislation in relation to staff management issues.

Essential:
•Minimum 5 years Ruby on Rails or Java technology development experience
•Previous project team lead or management experiences for teams of 3+ developers.
•Ability to communicate with all levels of management and staff to achieve desired outcomes and build strong alliances and relationships
•Excellent analytical and evaluative skills
•1-2 years experience (and strong preference) of working in an Agile development environment
•Highly developed verbal and written communication skills
•Experience in interpreting and resolving both high-level and detailed user requirements & business process problems
•Results oriented
•Strong organisational and time management skills; able to prioritise and handle multiple tasks effectively
•Familiarity with IT architecture frameworks, deliverables, trends, tools, and processes
•A commitment to quality and continuous improvement – including a willingness to question current practice, to be hands-on and with strong attention to detail
•Experience with mentoring one or more junior developers
•A passion for travel
•A good sense of humor

Desirable:
•Experience developing against iOS projects.
•Experience being a "scrum master" in an agile environment.
•Have previously recruited and built a development team.
