The Principal Product Engineer is responsible for ensuring that a product strategy and business goals are effectively translated to compelling experience designs, and that those designs are implemented by the digital innovation software engineering team and the clinical and operational teams. The work requires a deep understanding of user segments, user / market problems, an ability to develop solutions which create customer delight while minimizing system complexity and cost, and a track record of championing successful adoption of industry best practices for digital product development.
The Principal Product Engineer will:
* Provide mentoring to Product Engineers and Associate Product Engineers
* Provide leadership in understanding strategic needs and problems, as well as technical and operational capabilities and constraints, to translate executive-level business requirements into digital product designs, workflows, and/or requirements that meet short- and long-term organizational goals and ultimately lead to products providing real and lasting value to users evidenced by ongoing and regular usage
* Act as effective change agent for Agile-based product development based on industry best practices, to continually improve functioning and effectiveness of the entire product development group
* Provide technical leadership in the production of digital product specifications (in the form of lo- or hi-fidelity wireframes, Agile stories, epics, workflow diagrams, data models, dataflow diagrams, user acceptance tests, etc.)
* Inspire and collaborate on operational and/or clinical transformations that are required for product functionality
* Communicate up and around: ensure that internal and external stakeholders are aware, in a timely manner, of pending issues, pitfalls, and blockers which may compromise the success of the product. Provide leadership in addressing, managing, or removing obstacles/pitfalls/blockers
* Work collaboratively and effectively with product manager, business stakeholders, and all Agile team members, including those who may be in different geographic areas
* Special projects as assigned
Required qualifications for this position include:
* 8 years' experience including similar role on a Lean or Agile software development team, with responsibility for ensuring industry best-practice adoption by all Agile team members
* Master's degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience is required, Computer Science or Engineering disciplines preferred
* Experience working across an organization and with external partners to enable changes in data, operational, and clinical processes required for the product experience.
* Healthcare experience is preferred
* Experience applying Lean Startup principles a plus
* Experience with mobile-first, consumer-facing digital products a plus
* Experience working with external vendor and/or business partners a plus
* Experience coordinating product launch, organizational readiness activities a plus
* Demonstrated facility with Agile process management tools such as Jira or Mingle
* Demonstrated ability to create stories and designs and manage the Agile process in continuous integration / continuous delivery environments
* Demonstrated ability to lead Agile teams in continuous improvement activities
* Effective written and verbal communication skills and effective presentation skills
* Flexible leader committed to product and team success
* Data-driven decision-making
* A demonstrated track record of being a change agent, leaving every team and process better than you found it
