Sr. Software Engineer, Payments API

Rocket Lawyer is one of the largest and most widely used online legal service platforms in the world. Rocket Lawyer has over 9 million registered users creating over 32 thousand legal documents per day.

Rocket Lawyer is seeking an experienced, self-sufficient and team-oriented software engineer to be a founding member of the Payments team. Our primary payments product will be our API. Our first customer will be our internal business lines.

Building a great API requires building out the right tooling, documentation, and libraries. The ideal candidate will have a passion for complex systems and building the tools used to easily communicate with those systems.

Ideally, you have a knack for making tools powerful without compromising their ease of use. This applies to visual tools (like dashboards and documentation) and programming tools (like an API). Your goal is to balance user experience, aesthetics, legal and financial considerations, and a general sense for what's most important.

A lot of your time will be spent engineering and implementing tools, working closely with the engineers building the abstractions, and building product that meets the requirements of our internal and external partners.

Job Duties:

- Design and build a world-class payments product

- Programming tools (APIs)

- Tooling (internal dashboards)

- Visual tools (documentation and libraries)

- Ensure the scalability and reliability of the API

- Write high throughput code in the right open-source language

- Interface with the internal teams consuming the APIs to incorporate their feedback

- Operate like you're in a small, fast-paced startup

Experience and Skills:

- 2+ years experience in high-growth technology environments

- BS or MS degree in Computer Science

- Experience developing services / APIs using RESTful style architecture.

- Strong understanding of general ecommerce and payments

- Strong command of Java

- Must be proactive, self-sufficient, detailed, organized, and a team-player

- Demonstrated success working with small or cross-functional teams

- Experience working in an Agile/Iterative-style development group.

- Test-Driven development utilizing unit testing frameworks and automated testing.

- Prior experience building payment APIs is a plus
