Direct Management responsibility of the Systems group and 24 x 7 support of a big, fast-growing web portal with a huge and dedicated user base
The Systems Operations Manager/Production Support has direct management responsibility of the Systems group which is comprised of Systems Administrators of varying experience levels. The Systems team is responsible for running the 24 x 7 x 365 infrastructure for this huge web portal. This individual will play a key role in leading his/her team in project planning, execution, and reporting. In addition, this individual will be responsible for the departments operations, for defining departmental processes and procedures, ensuring internal and external SLA*s are being met, conducting staff performance reviews, departmental hiring, and management reporting. The ideal candidate has 8+ years of direct hands-on experience operating a 24 x 7 highly available and large server farms and production systems, and 5+ years experience managing a team of Linux and Windows system administrators. This individual should have the technical depth/breadth and strategic skills to make good decisions for future growth and operation.
Job Duties
* Oversee the operation of the heterogenous node farm and the hundreds of servers that operate online games and other services for the myriad of domains and sub-domains.
* Work closely with the internal production organization and customer support to ensure there is a quick turn around on escalated support tickets and that communication and process channels between Support and Systems are open and smooth.
* Continually improve on security and patch management process for our production systems.
* Backup/restore and disaster recovery strategies and implementation.
* Review and continually improve on systems monitoring and alerting of all critical systems components
* Plan and coordinate systems maintenances with multiple internal groups to ensure minimal impact to internal and external customers. Define scope, customer impacts, back out plans
* Write/review operational documentation and troubleshooting guidelines
* Collaborate with internal Software Engineering, Networking, and Product Management groups on new product offerings and enhancements to existing products.
* Maintain, Prioritize, and justify list of projects
* Track purchases to the budget
* Perform other managerial duties such as writing performance evaluations and reviewing them with employees, coordinate and running team meetings, etc.
Required Qualifications
* Minimum 8 years administrating production Linux and Windows systems in a 24x7 environment. Heavy emphasis on Linux and large server farm administration.
* Minimum 5 years experience managing/leading a team of Systems Administrators.
* Strong experience implementing security policies around user access, systems and network security, and intrusion detection.
* Practical experience with systems hardware, administration, and troubleshooting.
*Sense of humor - dry wit preferred.
*Excellent communications skills needed to manage up, down, and across the organization.
* Experience managing an on-call rotation schedule.
* Experience working in and building out data centers
* Experience with virtualization technologies in a production environment.
* Strong experience with scripting using Python, PERL, and shell.
* Experience with administering mySQL and MS-SQL databases.
* Strong ability to prioritize workload and shift attention among changing priorities.
* Strong support and service skills with internal organizations.
* Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
* Ability to function under pressure in a highly dynamic and high growth environment.
* College degree with an emphasis on technology.
