Senior Manager Competitive Analysis (IRC34820)

Job Responsibilities

The competitive analysis team at Synaptics is responsible for benchmarking our products against competitors' products through the measurement and analysis of performance data. The manager of the team will have unique visibility into Synaptics current product portfolio, our advanced development activity, and our competitors' offerings. This is a cross-functional role that involves working with advanced development, core technology and our two product division strategic marketing teams. The manager will support the Handheld and PC Divisions in developing market leading product roadmaps. The role has high visibility within the company, including regular reporting out to the executive staff. The ability to interpret and communicate the results of the competitive analysis is as important as the technical aspects of the analysis itself.
The manager will be expected to assume the following responsibilities:
• Supervising a team of Competitive Analysis Engineers with Electrical Engineering and Software Engineering backgrounds
• Directing and coordinating tear downs of competitive human computer interface products, including
o Understanding the mechanical structure and electronics architecture of these products
o Understanding the cost drivers for various human interface technologies and the associated components, including ASICs, sensors, and displays
• Providing ongoing analysis of the performance of on-the-market products containing our and our competitors' touch solutions, including
o Developing a suite of performance metrics for the characterization of touch technologies
o Maintaining and expanding capabilities to measure performance of touch technologies, both integrated with and independent of end products
• Synthesizing and interpreting the results of technical analysis, including
o Analyzing and aggregating competitive human computer interface technology news through online resources, journals and conferences
o Detecting underlying technology changes occurring in our key product markets and understanding the implications for our technology roadmaps
• Engaging cross-functionally with our core technology and product divisions, including
o Working with our strategic marketing teams to develop market leading product roadmaps
o Providing input into our silicon and core technology roadmap
o Working with business development functionality to evaluate new market opportunities for Synaptics
• Communicating and presenting the competitive analysis results to various audiences such as our architecture and advanced development teams, technical marketing teams, corporate leadership, and customers.

Required Qualifications

• BSEE degree with a minimum of 10years of directly applicable experience. Other engineering disciplines will also be considered with appropriate work experience. An MSEE degree is preferred.
• Minimum of 3 years of management experience leading an engineering functionality
• Understanding of ASIC costs, including wafers, test and packaging
• Understanding of product manufacturing costs including mechanical structures, connectors, PCBs, components, test and assembly
• Understanding of electronics system architecture used in embedded applications and PCs
• Experience with various interface protocols such as I2C, SPI, USB and display interfaces
• Systems level knowledge of embedded applications and PC products
• Self-motivated, driven and resourceful
• Able to integrate and interpret data from multiple sources into a cohesive and concise form
• Excellent presentation and communication skills, both written and oral
• Willingness to travel domestically and internationally to our global office sites and our customers' sites

Desired Qualifications

• Previous competitive analysis experience, including chip and die analysis, product tear downs, performance analysis and BOM cost estimating
• Previous systems engineering, applications engineering, or technical marketing experience with touch screens, touch controllers and/or display drivers
