Position Overview:


The key job functions for this position are as follows:

• Defining amazing user experience (UX) and user interfaces (UI) for mobile products at Lonely Planet:
o UX: Develop elegant and functional mobile user experience concepts, models, prototypes, templates, patterns, scenarios, and specifications that fulfil (and exceed where possible) brand, business and user goals.
o UI: Develop and produce stunning and functional user interface concepts and interface designs.
• Participate in defining the product roadmap with VP of Wireless and other team members.
• Contribute creative ideas and apply creative thinking to problem solving.
• Help ensure that all design work is completed on time and within allocated budgets.
• Be a strong advocate for the customer.

The key duties and responsibilities for this position are as follows:

1. User experience (UX) design, conceptualization, specification and prototyping
2. Interface design (UI)
3. Graphic design


This role:
• Reports directly to the VP wireless.
• Co-operates with the Creative Director for idea development and creative approval for quality, consistency, messaging, tone and visual direction.

• Development of elegant, intuitive and pragmatic UX models.
• Attention to detail and quality output by agreed deadlines.
• Working effectively with business owners and team members to develop concept directions.
• Adhering to and contributing to global visual language guides.
• Assisting with user research and usability testing.
• Collaboration with design team and participation in training as required.

Key Skills / Experience / Knowledge / Qualifications / Attributes:

• Strong theoretical & applied UI and UX skills.
• Good at articulating design concepts and rationale to team members.
• Experience working in an Agile software development environment. (1 year+)
• Experience working in a small team/start up environment. (3 years+)
• Experience designing smartphone applications. (1 year+)
• Experience with user testing, information architecture & user centred design.
• Strong wire framing and paper prototyping skills. Ability to generate and document site maps and logic flows.
• Proficiency with with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Whiteboard markers.
• Experience working with both internal and external development and design teams.
• Excellent gut feel for products.
• A commitment to quality and continuous improvement – including a willingness to question current practice, to be hands-on and with strong attention to detail.
• Strong understanding of commercial business practises.
• Understanding of cross media design issues.
• Excellent understanding of colour, typography, layout and iconography, plus experience in designing mobile graphics.
• Excellent organisational skills, to manage several projects at the same time and well organised, with the ability to appropriately prioritise workload whilst maintaining strong attention to detail.
• Ability to give feedback and come up with solutions to solve design and usability issues.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Deadline oriented with a demonstrated ability work under pressure.
• A flexible/adaptable attitude.
• High level of initiative with a creative perspective to problem solving.
• Able to work independently and as part of a team.
• A desire to work with people to improve systems and processes.
• Negotiation skills and the ability to give feedback and come up with solutions to solve design problems.
• Enjoys working as part of a cross functional team on projects.
• A passion for travel.
• A good sense of humour.
• A desire to improve the way people travel.

Desirable Skills/Experience:

• Experience planning and doing user research and usability testing.
• Ability to communicate with all levels of management and staff to achieve desired outcomes and build strong alliances and relationships.
• A strong understanding of the limitations and advantages of developing apps on iOS, Android and other mobile platforms.
• Experiencing developing successful social networking and/or location based products.
