Job: 1370 - Manager, Systems Engineering

A part of the Harmonic Professional Services Organization, the Systems Engineering Department consists of a geographically diverse team of talented engineers. This department provides the technical staff for system integration projects globally, delivering world-class digital video systems to many of the leading service providers.

Working closely with clients, internal organizations, as well as industry partners, the person in this critical position will provide day-to-day guidance and management of the systems engineering team to ensure timely, high quality delivery of Harmonic solutions.

Education: Bachelors degree in Engineering or Computer Science. Masters degree preferred.

Required Experience:

- Minimum 10 years experience in a high technology industry. Background in Professional Services or technical leadership role in digital video and/or networking system deployment, a plus.
- Minimum 3 years technical team management responsibility with direct reports. Proven track record in managing geographically diverse staff is highly desirable.
-Thorough understanding of project lifecycles for technically complex hardware/software system solutions.
- Background in scoping, drafting and delivering proposals and technical Statements of Work for professional services engagements.
- Ability to successfully multi-task in a rapidly changing environment and able to convert objectives to specific actions.
- Extensive customer facing experience with proven record of professionally managing customer escalation situations.
- Demonstrated ability for team-building, staff development, and process improvement. Experience in formulating and driving strategies to fruition.
- Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communications skills.
- It is highly desirable the candidate has expertise in some of the following technical areas:
- Infrastructure architecture and design of complex distributed systems.
- TCP/IP Networking and Communication systems.
- MPEG-2/MPEG-4 encoding standards for standard-definition and high-definition video.
- Digital video system architectures in various delivery methods: ATSC, DBS, IPTV, Cable and wireless.
- Multi-screen video technology, including transcoding, to TV, PC and handheld devices.
- Video-On-Demand (VOD) ecosystems for multi-node clusters, including video servers, traffic/billing systems, middleware and edge devices.
- Workflow systems.
- Conditional Access (encryption) and Network Management Systems.
- Digital Program Insertion (DPI).

Responsibilities:

- Align departmental processes and procedures to the strategic plan of the organization.
- Provide technical and organizational leadership. Ensure utilization and effectiveness of geographically diverse staff.

- Hiring, coaching, motivating, evaluating performance, and developing direct reports. Continually refines talent pool by evaluating individual performance levels and identifying training opportunities. Clearly communicate career path and progression opportunities.
- Working with peers in the product development groups to facilitate new product training and knowledge dissemination to staff.
- Manage and utilize department laboratory for project build and staff training purposes.
- Define KPI metrics to measure performance and formulate actionable plans for process improvement.
- Working with the Project Management Office (PMO), identify and ensure proper technical staffing for the project life cycle from project kickoff, design review, site surveys, detailed planning to equipment staging, installation, commissioning, testing and final acceptance, with adherence to time, budget and defined quality standards.
- Provide escalation path for critical issues encountered in the field. Facilitate rapid resolution by working with internal and external organizations.
- Support a culture of continuous improvement on projects by conducting post-mortem reviews and incorporating corrective actions into future deployment activities.
- Some travel required (20%).
