UNIX Systems Engineer- Network Platform Support San Diego, CA Responsibilities: *Plan, design, build, and tune scalable, high performance unix-based systems in an e-commerce platform environment consisting of multi-tiered, complex web applications *Perform detailed capacity planning for large complex websites; identify resource constraints and engineer solutions *Solid understanding of the entire software engineering process including requirement analysis, design, scheduling, implementation, review, quality assurance, issue tracking, source control, version *control and deployment *Ensure the reliable backup of critical systems and data *Execute detailed performance analysis of unix systems and java applications in order to identify optimal tuning measures to maximize efficiency *Create and maintain documentation of environment design, configuration and workflow *Provide management and support of production and non-production environments comprised of several hundred linux-based application servers *Maintain optimization of environments including upgrades, performance monitoring and system audit tasks *Provide end-user support as required *Provide accurate timelines for specific tasks assigned Requirements: *3-5+ years experience working in a Unix-based production environment (not corporate IT) *Advanced kernel, system, and application performance tuning experience *Strong troubleshooting skills with Java, Tomcat and Apache in a large e-commerce environment *Knowledge of and experience with a broad range of application servers, web servers, messaging servers, and database servers. *Deep understanding of key system scalability concerns: threading, load balancing, partitioning, replication, etc. *Able to converse in Perl and Shell; other languages welcome *Expertise in a broad variety of application technologies (apache, tomcat, load balancing, memcache, etc). *In-depth knowledge of server hardware architecture (Intel) *Solid understanding of TCP/IP; leverages networking principles (L2/L3, STP) to solve complicated problems *Extensive understanding of RAID technologies *Must possess a strong ability to document standards, methods and produce drawings of environments *Exceptional team work as well as being able to work under own initiative are highly desired *Take part in 24x7x365 on-call coverage as part of the proactive, production support role Competencies: *Business Acumen: Understands business implications of decisions; Demonstrates knowledge of market and competition; Aligns work with strategic goals *Customer Service: Responds promptly to customer needs; Solicits customer feedback to improve service; Responds to requests for service and assistance; Meets commitments *Ethics: Works with integrity and ethically; Upholds organizational values *Interpersonal Skills: Maintains confidentiality; Listens to others without interrupting; Keeps emotions under control; Remains open to others´ ideas and tries new things *Leadership: Exhibits confidence in self and others; Inspires and motivates others to perform well; Effectively influences actions and opinions of others; Accepts feedback from others; Gives appropriate recognition to others *Oral Communication: Speaks clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations; Listen and obtain clarification; responds well to questions. *Organizational Support: Follows policies and procedures; Supports organization´s goals and values *Problem Solving: Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner; Gathers and analyzes information skillfully; Develops alternative solutions *Professionalism: Approaches others in a tactful manner; Reacts well under pressure; Treats others with respect and consideration regardless of their status or position *Quality: Demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness; Monitors own work to ensure quality *Teamwork: Exhibits objectivity and openness to others´ views *Written Communication: Writes clearly and informatively Certificates, Licenses, Technical Education and/or Experience: *BA or BS in relevant field (Computer Science, Electrical Engineering) or equivalent is preferred. *Extensive experience using HP/DELL Linux server hardware *Expert in Linux administration on enterprise-class systems Sony is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
