Sr. Staff System Engineer - R&D:
This position deals primarily with the new technology and products related to Harmonic's IP-based video delivery systems and the transport of compressed video/audio over large WANs. Experience with IP network architectures, IP routing, and multilayer switched networks is required. This position requires digital video processing and systems knowledge. This position is suited to a System Design Engineer with a background in new development and with the experience and the aptitude to perform integration of new products into systems focused on advanced digital broadcast methods and techniques, multi-screen delivery, and on-demand systems for DBS, Cable, IPTV, and ATSC. Good system engineering skills as well as technical know-how and some software programming skills are required to be successful in this position.

Required Job Skills:
This can be either a Technical Leadership role or a first line management position dependant on candidate's prior experience and aptitude. In addition this position is expected to serve as technical lead on some critical projects and thus both management skills and technical leadership are required. This skill set includes, but is not limited to the following:
• Technical leadership of system developments
• Ability to work in a small, highly technical, system engineering team.
• Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
• Have a minimum of 10 years of relevant digital video industry experience and 4 years in IP network architecture and IP routing.
• Good understanding of IP networking, configuration, and associated network dynamics.
• Software programming experience in C++, PERL, Python
• Demonstrated understanding of most major technical disciplines associated with end-to-end video system design, integration, and testing of digital video processing and delivery systems. These include, but not limited to, the current protocols, technologies, methods, and techniques in the following areas:
o MPEG-2/DVB and MPEG-4 H.264/AVC compression, transcoding, splicing, and transport.
o Up to date digital video system solutions (off-air, DBS, cable, telco, wireless, etc.)
o Video compression technologies and video quality for Standard and High Definition.
o Multi-screen video systems employing Apple, Microsoft Smooth, and Adobe live streaming
o Video-on-Demand (VOD) and video servers.
o Conditional Access Systems.
o Network management Systems.
o Experience with digital video manipulation techniques such as Rate Shaping and Digital Program Insertion (DPI) is a plus.

Years of Direct Experience Required: 10 or more years of experience

Areas of Direct Experience:
Dependent on candidate's background and experience this could be a first line management position with 3-4 direct report, senior system engineers. In addition this position is expected to serve as technical lead for some critical projects. Below is a list of direct experience required and technical leadership areas for managing/leading the system engineering team.
• Technical leadership in the area of developing new architectural/functional system designs employing new technologies and products into Marketing and customer defined solution requirements.
• Close working relationships with SW and HW development teams to insure required system functionality and performance is achieved.
• Verification of system methods ,techniques employed, functionality, performance, and behavior that will be key in the customers' deployments or system solutions offered by Harmonic.
• Analysis and troubleshooting of problems related video/audio compression, statistical multiplexing, transcoding, and encryption.
• Prepare integration plans and conduct end-to-end system integrations for different applications/environments
• Interface with product development engineering for problem resolution.
• Create software tools, scripts, and automation software for validation of system operations and performance.
• Conduct system pre-QA acceptance testing in preparation for hand off of new systems to the QA team.
• Interface with Solutions Marketing, Technology Partners, or customers to verify implementation plan and ensure successful deployment according to system design specifications.
• Generate documentation such as system interface control documents, solution architecture specifications, and integration guides.
• Maintain a system development lab that includes a partner access for ecosystem integration and validation.

Educational Requirements: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science and the requisite number of years experience.
