Our client is an exciting bio-technology company that is looking for an experienced Chief Financial Officer.  This role will be based in the San Francisco Bay Area.  

 

The CFO will lead all aspects of financial planning and accounting functions of the company, and be responsible for guiding the organization through a rapid stage of growth. The CFO is also responsible for coordination across a diverse range of management stakeholders, continuously improving and scaling the financial functions and the organization.  The Chief Financial Officer is partner to the CEO and will assist with forward-looking goals and drive capital allocation strategy, modeling, forecasting, and budgeting to align.

 

Principal Responsibilities:

   Provide strategic guidance on the risk and financial implications of decisions in a multitude of growth areas.

    Provide financial management leadership including planning, oversight, and management with executive level partnership.

    Bring the company and financial systems to scale while preserving financial prudence. 

   Direct and coordinate financial planning and budget management functions. Provide support to department heads to create transparency around key financial parameters and assumptions, including spending controls/limits and expense accruals. Develop and maintain systems for monthly reporting processes for each department to ensure they are aware of their spending, variances to budget, and KPIs.

       Provide direction and groundwork for an initial public offering (IPO), ensuring financial infrastructure to successfully transition to public company, including SOX compliance. 

       Manage all accounting operations including Billing, AR, AP, GL, Cost Accounting, Inventory Accounting and Revenue Recognition. Responsible for GAAP compliance.

       Provide oversight and direction to department employees to align work with company OKRs in accordance with the organization's policies and procedures.

       Coach, mentor and develop staff on a daily basis, including overseeing new hire onboarding, regular feedback, disciplinary actions, career development and opportunities.

       Delegate responsibilities and tasks with an expectation of accountability and regular feedback.

       Foster a spirit of teamwork and unity among department members that allows for disagreement over ideas, conflict, and expeditious conflict resolution. Support a work culture that appreciates cohesiveness, supportiveness, and working effectively together.

       Create a workplace culture that is consistent with the company's mission, vision, and values.

       Oversee a performance management and development process in conjunction with HR, that includes OKR/goal setting, recognition, feedback around productivity and quality, and performance development planning.

       Maintain transparent communication. Communicate company updates through department meetings, 1:1 meetings, and other forms of communication.

       Maintain administrative oversight of work schedules, assignments, training, OT, PTO, telecommuting and absenteeism.

       Manage the overall operational, budgetary, and financial responsibilities of the department. Make decisions that are financially responsible, accountable, and justifiable.

       Plan and implement systems and resources to fulfill the work of the department efficiently and effectively.

       Plan, evaluate, and improve the efficiency of processes and procedures to enhance speed, quality, efficiency, or productivity. 

       Establish and maintain relevant controls and feedback systems to monitor department operations.  

 

Qualifications:

       Advanced degree in Accounting or Finance. CPA preferred.

       10+ years of management experience with strong technical and financial acumen and well versed in U.S. GAAP. Understanding of advanced accounting, regulatory issues, and tax planning.

       Experience working in a growing start-up environment required, with a preference for biotech, life science or tech.

       IPO experience, ideally via investment bank or direct experience with biotech IPO project specifically in CFO, CAO or Head of Finance role.

       Proven tenure, longevity and career track record.

       Possess strong forecasting ability, well-steeped in the practice of building revenue and expense forecasts, including hands on capabilities and scaling to high-level communications.

       Flexibility to adapt to constant change in a competitive environment. Highly accountable professional with ability to delegate effectively while also providing hands-on support & mentoring.

       Strategic thinker with ability to develop a long-term strategy while balancing near-term priorities.

       Strong written, oral, and presentation skills to communicate complex financial matters to a broad audience.

       Strong communications skills. Ability to adapt communication style to suit different audiences.

       Expertise in evaluating operational effectiveness and being able to provide internal business process improvement.

       Outstanding interpersonal relationship building and employee coaching. An aptitude for building and working alongside strong teams through interview, selection, integration, and resource management.
