[KITlist-Tech] Research Programmer (Los Angeles, CA)

Please direct your responses to: recruitment.language.weaver@sdl.com

Join us as we push the boundaries of machine translation. At SDL Language Weaver, we have nearly a decade of experience in ground-breaking research and in providing high-quality large-scale statistical machine translation systems. We offer research opportunities that are quickly pushed to market and each contributor makes an enormous impact. We seek individuals who have great ideas and want to see those ideas applied in practice.

The Research Programmer will assist in the development of our next-generation translation architecture. Initially this role will focus on projects which require superlative C++ programming skills and strong familiarity with distributed systems and NoSQL databases (memcache, Redis, MongoDB, Berkeley DB, Tokyo Cabinet). The Research Programmer will frequently be called upon to devise algorithmic solutions that can handle massive amounts of data, and which work well in large-scale distributed settings. Longer term initiatives will require creative engineering solutions to research problems as they arise. The position affords the opportunity to acquire first-hand research experience in one of the hottest areas of computational linguistics.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• BS or greater in Computer Science/Engineering or related discipline (MS or Ph.D. is a plus).
• Minimum 2 years combination of professional/research experience programming solutions and applications in C++.
• Experience in building distributed and high-performance networking applications.
• Superior skills in data structures and algorithm design for large scale distributed environments.
• Cross-platform (Unix/Mac/Windows) application development experience
• Scalability and performance engineering experience highly desirable.
• Familiarity with NoSQL DBs (memcache, Redis, MongoDB, Berkeley DB, Tokyo Cabinet) a must.
• Experience with statistical machine translation, statistical natural language processing and/or machine learning is desirable.

ABOUT US:
Language Weaver, Inc., was founded in January 2002 to commercialize a breakthrough approach to automatic language translation and natural language processing, based on research advances made at the University of Southern California's Information Sciences Institute (USC/ISI).

Language Weaver's resulting product, statistical machine translation software (SMTS), uses a statistical rather than traditional rule-based approach to correlate words and word groupings from language to language and produce the highest probability output. In July, 2010 Language Weaver was acquired by SDL and became SDL Language Weaver.

SDL is the leader in Global Information Management (GIM) solutions that empower organizations to accelerate the delivery of high-quality multilingual content to global markets. Its enterprise software and services integrate with existing business systems to manage the delivery of global information from authoring to publication and throughout the distributed translation supply chain.

SDL offers clients an end to end Global Information Management Solution. The business is growing rapidly, both organically and through acquisition, and derives approximately 50% of its revenues through North American based clients.

Quite simply, we accelerate the way the world communicates!

We offer a competitive benefits package inclusive of:
• Competitive base salary
• Casual dress environment
• HMO & PPO Health Insurance Options
• Life & Disability Insurance
• Flexible Spending Accounts
