[KITlist-Tech] Research Scientist (Los Angeles, CA)

Please direct your responses to: recruitment.language.weaver@sdl.com

Come and explore the frontiers of machine translation at SDL Language Technologies. Our division has nearly a decade of experience in creating and deploying high-quality, large-scale statistical machine translation systems. We offer the opportunity of research in a dynamic setting where a single contributor can have an enormous impact. Our environment should appeal to the individual who cares both about ideas and about seeing those ideas applied in practice.

The Research Scientist will assist in shaping the research agenda of the machine translation division. Since we deal with emergent technology, the position requires an ability to stay up-to-date with the latest research and to skillfully assess directions for future pursuit. Ideally, the Research Scientist strikes a balance between theory and practice, offering clean and elegant solutions that also scale to realistic translation scenarios. Often the Research Scientist will need to frame the question itself: the commercial setting and its accompanying challenges pose a variety of interesting research problems never considered in an academic setting.

SDL Language Technologies values its strong ties to the research community. The Research Scientist is encouraged to develop patentable algorithms and methods, to write articles for publication, and to make presentations at conferences.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Ph.D. in Computer Science/Engineering (or related discipline)
• Strong background in machine translation, NLP, and/or machine learning.
• Experience with C++, Python, Perl.
• Experience with knowledge representation and uncertain reasoning is desirable
• Experience with large-scale data processing with Hadoop is desirable

ABOUT US:
Language Weaver, Inc., was founded in January 2002 to commercialize a breakthrough approach to automatic language translation and natural language processing, based on research advances made at the University of Southern California's Information Sciences Institute (USC/ISI).

Language Weaver's resulting product, statistical machine translation software (SMTS), uses a statistical rather than traditional rule-based approach to correlate words and word groupings from language to language and produce the highest probability output. In July, 2010 Language Weaver was acquired by SDL and became SDL Language Weaver.

SDL is the leader in Global Information Management (GIM) solutions that empower organizations to accelerate the delivery of high-quality multilingual content to global markets. Its enterprise software and services integrate with existing business systems to manage the delivery of global information from authoring to publication and throughout the distributed translation supply chain.

SDL offers clients an end to end Global Information Management Solution. The business is growing rapidly, both organically and through acquisition, and derives approximately 50% of its revenues through North American based clients.

Quite simply, we accelerate the way the world communicates!
