Ruby on Rails Developer
San Francisco

We are an innovative, venture backed start-up based in San Francisco. Our mission: to elevate the current state of education, using cutting-edge web technology to enable real-time collaborative learning. We have created a social learning network that helps students gain an academic edge through online gaming and interaction. Our platform offers students a fun and engaging way to master academic skills and to prepare for standardized tests. We are currently growing and looking for a Ruby on Rails Developer to join our creative and collaborative team.
We are agile. Not in the biz-dev-speak sort of way, but in the agile development, extreme programming, Kent Beck sort of way.

We pair program every day. We take advantage of the collective and unique human experiences of two individuals working towards the same goal. As a pair, we don't write a single line of production code without first expressing the problem and our expectations of what we're going to solve with a descriptive test. As we do so, we learn from each other, and turn something ambiguous into an actionable set of specifications. We then write the simplest code possible to satisfy the tests, and then refactor the code if needed.

The right candidate will possess the following qualities necessary to succeed in this role:
• Working knowledge of Ruby language and Rails framework
• Understanding of object-oriented design, design patterns and how they apply to Ruby
• Understanding of Ruby meta-programming and able to articulate where it's appropriate
• Solid understanding of SQL and data modeling for scalability and performance
• Strong XHTML/CSS/JavaScript and MVC framework experience
• Understanding of and willingness to employ agile development practices
• Strong analytical and problem solving skills
• Able to clearly articulate design ideas, while being receptive to constructive criticism
Requirements:
• 1+ years experience with Ruby on Rails, Javascript, SQL
• BS in Computer Science or equivalent experience
• Experience with agile, iterative, and test-driven development methods
• Experience with continuous integration (we use TeamCity)
• Experience with performance and scalability
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment
