About the Job
Yahoo!'s Linux team is looking for an experienced technical architect to design and drive the build and release process of our customized Linux distribution, which powers the majority of Yahoo!'s production servers. We are looking for an individual with exceptionally strong Linux skills and a solid background in Linux release engineering, package management, system deployment and maintenance in large enterprise environments.
This is a highly visible position that requires a strong team player with excellent communication skills and a passion to drive projects across team boundaries. The Linux release architect will work with system engineering architects, tools and software developers, security teams and other infrastructure groups to advance Yahoo!'s core infrastructure technology.
Essential Job Functions
- Build and release of customized, RHEL based Linux images
- Design and architecture of automated build and release processes
- Work closely with QA to integrate automated testing
- Work with colleagues in various business units to drive alignment of core technologies (tools, hardware & performance engineering, networking, security)
- Provide expertise and support to business units using Linux
- Help drive best practices and consistency across the organization
- Evangelize the technology vision and strategy for Linux
Basic/Minimum Job Qualifications
- 5 - 10 years of Linux based software development experience with 3+ years as an architect or lead
- Expert knowledge of the architecture of Red Hat Enterprise Linux or comparable Linux distros
- Expert knowledge of Linux package management and maintenance (RPM, yum)
- Expert knowledge of automated installation technologies (kickstart)
- Knowledge and experience with build and test automation systems (Hudson, Koji)
- Knowledge and experience with source control systems (SVN, git)
- Excellent knowledge of scripting languages (shell, perl, python)
- Active open source engagement a plus
- Kernel development knowledge a plus
- MSCS/CE/EE or equivalent experience

- Exceptionally strong communication and project management skills
- Proven ability to define, outline, and plan project goals and objectives
- The ability to communicate well with users and stakeholders across team boundaries
- A natural affinity for streamlining and automating common tasks to ensure consistency and efficiency
- A high level of personal organization, and the ability to prioritize competing needs
- Knack for troubleshooting a variety of system, networking, and hardware problems
