About the Job
We are looking for a Director of Engineering with a deep understanding of software development and delivery, a passion for rapid development and deployment of your team´s software, the curiosity and drive to tackle substantial challenges, and a focus on improving the Internet for everyone. The successful candidate for this position will have a deep understanding of Internet mechanics, a track record of delivery of innovative software solutions at Internet speed as well as significant management experience. This person will manage teams that work on designing, implementing, and deploying a worldwide network of client-side download accelerators integrated with the broader Akamai platform and frameworks for rapid development of video player applications using Adobe Flash, and Microsoft Silverlight technologies for use with the Akamai HD Network.
About the Team
The Media and CDN Engineering team is responsible for all of the software used to deliver, store, and manage digital media and website content via the Akamai network. This includes developing and maintaining our Live and On-Demand Streaming products that are an integral part of Akamai´s globally distributed network of EdgeServers that deliver media content for major events. On the back end, developers work on Akamai´s NetStorage system that stores massive amounts of customer content. This group also builds and maintains the StreamOS Portal, which enables customers to efficiently manage and monetize their digital media content.
Responsibilities:
* Provide managerial and technical leadership to the client-side focused teams.
* Lead the engineering team develop the product roadmap and translating business needs to technical requirements and designs to ensure the solution meets customer requirements.
* Drive engineering design quality and execution.
* Strong communication skills are required to represent team milestones back to engineering and business management.
* Develop strong partnership with Product Management and, together, works with the Business Stake holders to achieve project goals.
* Manage projects, keep them on track, generate ideas on new products.
Basic Qualifications
* Education: Master´s Degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
* Overall Experience: Minimum 7 years experience in high tech environment.
* Minimum 3 years experience managing managers and working on their performance and the performance of their teams.
* Minimum 5 years experience developing software in C++ on Windows or Linux experience in a distributed, grid, or peer-to-peer computing environments.
Desired Qualifications
* Knowledge of UI design principles and technologies such as Javascript, Flash/Flex/Action Script, and Silverlight.
* Experience developing end-user software that can run on multiple browsers (Windows, Mac and Unix).
* Familiarity with streaming media.
* Deep familiarity with TCP/IP, HTTP, Internet routing and security protocols.
* Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
* Experience acting as a advocate for products within a company.
* The ideal candidate is goal-oriented, able to work on long-term projects without losing focus, and highly organized.
