About the Job
The emphasis of this position is to lead a team which handles problem escalations from customer care, engineering and professional services. As one of the core front line engineers for the product, you will answer questions about how the platform works and ensure that applications are operating successfully. You will work very closely with customer care and other engineering groups to troubleshoot and improve issues in the field and propose configuration and code changes. The role will also assist with development to improve the support infrastructure (knowledge base, command line tools, and web applications) for other groups in the company, both inside and outside of Engineering. You will become familiar with the details of our architecture and code base, along with other Akamai distributed systems. This knowledge will be fundamental for this role.
About the Team
The Media and CDN Engineering group is responsible for developing the Akamai HD Network solution as well as traditional streaming services like Apple® QuickTime™ , Microsoft® Windows Media™, and Adobe Flash® Streaming. The group is directly responsible for developing software which streams almost all of the biggest online events including World Cup Soccer, Olympics, NCAA March Madness and other major sporting and entertainment events. The Media and CDN Engineering group is also responsible for the software used to deliver, download, store, and manage digital media and other web content via the Akamai network.
As a team within Media and CDN Engineering, the Stability Engineering team works closely with our professional services and customer care groups to solve very difficult customer issues using detailed technical knowledge of Akamai components and services. This group handles questions from other Akamai engineering groups about how various components work in detail, and we help analyze problems and suggest solutions. We also fix bugs related to issues we find, and implement changes to existing features to improve performance, or to make them easier to use.
Responsibilities:
* Help manage the day-to-day support work and longer term project work of the team.
* Develop and enforce processes and procedures used by the Stability Engineering and other teams to help diagnose and mitigate problems.
* Work with the Platform development team to solve platform problems and design code fixes.
* Implement code fixes and design regression tests to make permanent solutions to platform problems.
* Work with the documentation team to create and maintain a knowledge base of platform issues.
Basic Qualifications
* Education: Bachelor´s Degree in Computer Science or 5 years additional industry experience in lieu of degree.
* 5 years industry experience with Linux or other unix-like flavor.
* 5 years industry experience in C or C++ programming.
* 2 years experience leading a small team.
Desired Qualifications
* Experience in one or more scripting languages (shell, Perl, Python, etc).
* Experience with and detailed knowledge of the HTTP protocol.
* Exposure to network protocols (TCP/IP, DNS, etc).
* Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
* The ideal candidate is goal-oriented, able to work on long-term projects without losing focus, and highly organized.
