About the Job
* Develop software for Akamai's distributed storage platform which acts as origin server for many of the world's most highly visible web sites.
* Work in a small team environment with strong support from software development and infrastructure organizations.
* Interact with Akamai Network Operations teams to understand production system issues with the goal of developing improvements.

About the Team
The Media and CDN Engineering group is responsible for all of the software used to deliver, download, store, and manage digital media and other web content via the Akamai network. This includes developing and maintaining Akamai´s core caching and web server technology that runs on our network of 60,000+ servers located around the world, as well as the Live and On-Demand Streaming products that are used to deliver media content for major events. On the back end, developers work on Akamai´s NetStorage system that stores massive amounts of customer content. This group also builds and maintains the StreamOS Portal, which enables customers to efficiently manage and monetize their digital media content. All of this technology is built upon our customized operating system and kernel, also maintained by this group. The members of this group also work on some of our internally developed monitoring software that constantly provides server health and status information to our centralized monitoring infrastructure.

Responsibilities:
* Interact with other development groups to leverage existing technologies.
* Document your designs and present your work for peer review within the team.
* Analyze your work with respect to performance and reliability.
* Build tests for your software to demonstrate proper operation to meet both internal and external customer expectations for reliability and performance.
* Follow good development methodology, including collaboration with testing and SQA departments to successfully deploy new system components.

Basic Qualifications
* Masters in computer science or computer engineering, or equivalent work experience, with at least 5 years of recent experience in a development role.
* Minimum 5 years experience with C / C++ and scripting languages in a Linux environment.
* Minimum 3 years development experience with threaded and /or forking server code.
* Minimum 5 years experience with complex software systems that run in a distributed environment.
* Minimum 3 years development experience with at least one of the following: HTTP, FTP, rsync, SSL, and / or SSH protocols.

Desired Qualifications
* High performance storage, including Linux journaling file systems.
* Data mirror/replication technology.
* Experience with threaded and/or forking server code.
* Experience working with all OS services including disk and network I/O as well as server and daemon design.
* Self directed with excellent communication skills.
