Job Title Technical Writer
Duties:
- The responsibility will be to work within a group of writers and develop a set of hardware documentation for the next generation of IMG (Information Management Group) appliances.
- The manuals cover installation, product description and various servicing, troubleshooting and maintenance functions.
- Document types are both revisions of existing documentation and creation of new documents.
- Work includes developing on-line help.
- The IMG Appliance engineering organization is responsible for taking IMG software backup products, such as NetBackup and Backup Exec, and porting these to create a turnkey appliance.
- The document writing is currently divided into hardware and software sections. The work in this department will be mainly hardware based.
- There is some level of software cross over for documents that require both hardware and software references.
Skills
- Minimum 2 to 4 years of technical writing experience on computer hardware systems.
- Excellent English writing skills.
- Ability to write clear instructions for what may be complex operations.
- Understanding of computer storage systems highly desired (hardware and software).
- Ability to deliver documents on a defined timeline.
- Excellent communications skills within a group of engineers Familiarity with tools like Putty, CLIs and GUIs to access the features of the equipment.
- Familiarity with both Windows and Linux based systems.
- Source documents can be in XML, Microsoft Word, or PDF.
Writing format:
- Documents need to be in an XML format with a tool like XMetal.
- Documents need to be put into a content management system like Vasont.
- Illustrations are created or updated in Paint and Visio.
- Minimum requirement is to be able to write in Microsoft Word.
- Minimum requirement for illustrations is Microsoft Paint Skills in writing in an XML based editor highly desired.
Education
- BA in English or BS in Computer Engineering
Location:- Mountain View, CA
Duration:- 7+ months
