General Position Summary
This position reports directly to the CEO, and will be an integral part of the core management team. The VP of R&D will interact with all functional areas of the company and the Board of Directors.
We are looking for an energetic, creative thinker. Must be a self-starter with proven success operating in a strong team environment. The applicant must have strong mechanical device design and troubleshooting skills and a firm understanding of catheter based medical device development.
This high-level position requires the ability to manage multiple projects with tight deadlines and support other areas of the company. The successful candidate must also be willing to roll up their sleeves and put in the effort and work the hours needed to achieve company goals. The position also requires someone with the abilities to write and/or edit technical materials and interact with medical advisors and customers. This role will interface with Finance, Regulatory, Quality and Manufacturing.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
• Develop new catheter based endoscopy devices and guide the product through to commercialization
• Take responsibility for completing projects in a meaningful timeframe
• Develop improved processes for stent coating and improve consistency and performance
• Identify product field problems and manage the rapid execution of improvements
• Manage internal and external engineering resources
• Work with manufacturing engineering to optimize devices for assembly and manage the transfer of devices into production
• Provide technical support for manufacturing including identification and implementation of assembly fixtures, processes and other solutions that improve the consistency of device assembly
• Observe live cases and work with physicians
Position Qualifications
The VP of Research & Development is required to have at minimum, a Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field, and at least 7-10 years' experience in medical device development including catheter systems. Candidates must have experience operating in a small, rapidly growing, venture backed company.
• Must be mechanically intuitive and with hands on proficiency in medical device design, troubleshooting, prototyping and testing
• Highly organized and motivated to do whatever it takes to complete projects according to an established time line
• Ability to multi-task, including managing multiple projects and people is needed
• Fluent knowledge of Solid Works and a working knowledge of stents, stent coating and stent delivery are required
• Must have strong organizational, interpersonal and leadership skills
• Ability of operate in an FDA and Notified Body regulated medical device environment is needed
